Ergotherapy as an important mediator in the logopedic rehabilitation of children with disabilities”

On June 10-11, 2011, Specialists in the field of recovery services for children with special needs from regions Dubasari, Tiraspol, Rezina, Sarata Galbena, Criuleni and Peresecina attended the seminar on “Ergotherapy as an important mediator in the logopedic rehabilitation of children with disabilities”, organized within the project “Development and promotion of network of rehabilitation centers for children with special educational needs (SEN) in Moldova”. The moderator was Ms. Zinaida Navaloaca, superior degree expert from “Speranta” center in Chisinau. During this workshop, the practitioners were trained on logopedic recovery, which is algorithmic and heuristic based on ergotherapy - the occupational therapy that operates through manual work for the maintenance, activation and reactivation of productive and creative capabilities as well as of the native speech potential.

The participants were divided into three workshops, each focusing on cases with different logopedic diagnoses. For this purpose, specific methods of logopedic rehabilitation have been proposed, including: the verbal method through explanation and conversation, the active method with exercises and games, the indications of motion representing coordination, precision and skill, environmental indications through notification of sounds from nature, the presentation of actual materials from nature, imitation, the articulator demonstration, articulation exercises-imitative, independent and spontaneous, and the mechanical method. As a result of the analysis of each diagnosis, the specialists have set targets, methods and particular solutions for each case, and have developed correctional recuperative projects for their individual logopedic activity.

The importance of this seminar for the practical activity of the speech therapists who treat children with disabilities and SEN is extremely significant since it highlights the accessibility and effectiveness of occupational therapy in any kind of recovery, and particularly focuses on stimulating the formation of independence, individuality and socialization of children with special educational needs, which allows them to further adapt in the community and teaches them to cope with everyday life actively and independently.

The seminar was held within the project „Development and promotion of network of rehabilitation centers for children with special educational needs (SEN) in Moldova” supported by ERSTE Foundation (www.erstestiftung.org).
